Beck: “Gee, She sure sounds like a racist.”

May 27, 2009

Clips of Glenn Beck discussing the Sotomayor nomination today. Aside from the expected accusations of “legislating from the bench” and being a “judicial activist”, he’s also labeled her, multiple times, a racist. Her comments about Latina women making better decisions than white men is undoubtedly regrettable. But taken in context, including a reading of her judicial opinions, there is no reasonable way to conclude that she isn’t impartial and intellectually qualified to serve on the Court.

gee … her comments are “undoubtedly regrettable” right … If I made them, as a white male, they would have certainly been undoubtedly racist

    Empathy: It’s only for conservatives
Those attacking Sonia Sotomayor for talking about her hardscrabble background making her a better judge should tell us if they supported Sam Alito, who said the same thing
    (By Glenn Greenwald)

So I guess the Italian guy is also a racist

it’s good to see Glenn Beck is so concerned about injustice in this country, at least when it’s convenient to his agenda

People construct all kinds of myths for themselves. This comment, that somehow her background puts her in a unique (unique in the strictest sense of the word) position to dispense justice, sounds like one of those myths. Interestingly enough with all the talk of “empathy” from the President, this is a decidedly un-empathetic comment. But it is not racist as Beck is shrilling, just arrogant, and arrogance has never excluded judges from serving on the supreme court: just ask Antonin Scalia.
