The World (But Not America) Awaits…

May 25, 2009

On Wednesday, May 27th, an event of great importance to much of the world will take place. Many millions are waiting with growing anticipation and almost palpable excitement. Here in America, that event will almost certainly go unnoticed, except among small pockets of immigrants and a scattered assortment of fringe obsessives like myself. What is this momentous happening about which our nation is so sadly unenthused? It is, of course, the Champions League Final between Barcelona and Manchester United in Rome.

A competition between the world’s best soccer teams from the world’s best soccer leagues (The English Premier League, Serie A in Italy, La Liga in Spain, the Bundesliga in Germany, among others) featuring the world’s best players and played over the course of an entire year, the competition is like an American World Series…but it actually does include the best teams from the entire world and lasts for more than a month.
