What Would Johnny Cash Listen To?

May 22, 2009

The Americana Music Association, an organization that promotes and celebrates that inconveniently unclassifiable mix of country, rock, bluegrass, punk, independent and singer-songwriter music that some people call “Americana” (and others call Country-Punk, cowpunk, No Depression music, or just great songs) announced its nominations for year-end awards. This type of music owes little to the pop-music-with-a-southern accent that calls itself modern country music. Instead, this eclectic but traditional blend of music sounds more like the country music of Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, and Johnny Cash played by people who have listened to both the Carter family and the Clash. It’s performed by bands and artists like Alejandro Escovedo, Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, Buddy and Julie Miller, Kasey Chambers, Robert Plant and Allsion Krauss, Jay Farrar, Levon Helm, Jason Isbell (formerly of Drive By Truckers) and the Gourds. If you’re curious, here’s a link to their homepage and award nominees.
