Album Review: Steve Earle’s “Townes”

May 19, 2009

From the Onion AV Club, a review of country rock musician, songwriter, sometime “Wire” actor and recovering drug addict Steve Earle’s new album “Townes”, a tribute to his friend, legendary country rock songwriter, Townes Van Zandt. The two were friends before Van Zandt’s untimely death of complications from drugs, alcohol and mental health problems. I once heard the following quote from Steve Earle in an interview and it’s revealingly reprinted in the review:

According to legend, a young Steve Earle once declared, “Townes Van Zandt is the best songwriter in the whole world, and I’ll stand on Bob Dylan’s coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that.”
