John Edwards, An Affair and Campaign Sabotage

May 11, 2009

George Stephanopoulos at ABC News reveals that Edwards’ staffers who new or suspected that their candidate had an affair were willing to go so far as to sabotage his campaign if it looked likely that he would win the Democratic nomination.

Basically, if it looked like Edwards was going to win the Democratic Party nomination, they were going to sabotage his campaign, several former Edwards’ staffers have told me.

They said they were Democrats first, and if it looked like Edwards was going to become the nominee, they were going to bring down the campaign.

I have to say I’m a little conflicted about staffers that would secretly plot to destroy the candidacy of a man they were openly and vigorously working to get elected. If they believed that his adultery disqualified him for the office of President, they should have resigned. Their concern for their party and its ability to win the Oval office is laudable, but the secrecy and dishonesty smacks of careerism. Plus, it’s just kind of creepy.
