Bob Dylan’s New Album Tops the Billboard Charts and…

May 8, 2009

“the ‘Hannah Montana: the Movie’ soundtrack (Walt Disney) holds at No. 2 with 86,000.”

I don’t know what, if anything, the success of these two disparate pieces of music says about the composition of this country and its music-buying public. Do the results simply reflect the appeal of differing kinds of music to very different segments of our large and diverse country? Or are we really schizophrenic?

According to Billboard, there’s also some Black Sabbath-related heavy metal and some rap in the top ten of the charts, so it appears that the diversity of taste represented in the charts reflects album-buying by distinct groups. I suppose that the variety represented in the list is a good thing. And that there is still room for an artist like Bob Dylan at the very top is even better.
