Book Review: “American Rust”

The Economist has a review of Philipp Meyer’s novel set in a post-industrial Pennsylvania rust-belt town and centering around two young men experiencing the consequences of their own bad choices and bearing the burden of larger changes in the American social and economic landscape. As the reviewer notes, the work is timely. In an era of economic uncertainly and cultural shifts, the American ideal of making one’s way in the world with optimism and success is becoming less an expectation than a memory.
