Taliban Advances in Pakistan

April 24, 2009

The Washington Post has an article that discusses the Obama administration’s reaction to advances being made in Pakistan by Taliban forces. Recently, the Pakistani government granted concessions to the Taliban in the Swat Valley region of the country, ostensibly in exchange for an agreement by the Taliban to curtail its activities in the rest of the country. From the events of this week it appears that the Taliban have no intention of containing their influence to the Valley. And the President is rightly concerned.

Clinton and Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates publicly expressed frustration with reports that Taliban forces had moved eastward into two new districts of the country this week with no apparent resistance from government forces, bringing them within 60 miles of the Pakistani capital.
