Did Bush Keep us Safe From Terrorist Attacks?

April 23, 2009

With all the discussion in the media of the use of torture during the Bush administration, it is worth re-visiting the larger questions of whether the United States was and is the ongoing target of terrorists and what the Bush administration did, or didn’t do, correctly in attempting to uncover and preempt attacks against the United States. Timothy Noah has a long and continuing piece in Slate analyzing these questions. Noah discusses Bush’s claim that,

[e]very morning, I received a briefing on the threats to our nation. I vowed to do everything in my power to keep us safe. … [T]here can be little debate about the results. America has gone more than seven years without another terrorist attack on our soil. This is a tribute to those who toil night and day to keep us safe—law enforcement officers, intelligence analysts, homeland security and diplomatic personnel, and the men and women of the United States Armed Forces.
