Ranking: America’s most walkable cities

March 27, 2009

Eric Morris at Freakonomics has a story about a website which ranks American cities by their walkability. This is a pet interest of mine. Having seen the beautiful and serene dairy-farm dominated county I grew up in morph into a dispiriting mass of overcrowded roads leading to haphazard and aesthetically numbing strip malls and office parks, I must admit my bias for planned urban environments. Especially ones that foster community by being built to human scale, that are dense and walkable, and that do not rely on automobiles. Not surprisingly, most of the cities on the list are in the northeast or the west, cities that were built before the car came to dominate planning choices.
