The Quiverfull Movement

March 25, 2009

Listening to Washington, DC’s NPR station, WAMU, this morning, I heard a story about the Quiverfull movement. According to the report, some evangelical Christians, many of whom live in America’s midwest and south, are taking the bible’s command to “be fruitfull and multiply” literally. Eschewing birth control and family planning, these couples are choosing to have large families, in accordance with the dictates of their faith. An estimated 10,000 families are currently part of the movement and their practices are intended to ensure their growth. This is important, according to the story, to counterbalance the effect of the sinners and non-Christians are having in this world. One woman interviewed in the story had eight children and that number is about average within the movement. According to one Quiverfull mother, “[t]he womb is a powerful weapon.”

Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers.

Why did you stop your post there? I also heard the story and the rest of the sentence that you ended your post with is, “against the enemy”. “The womb is a powerful weapon against the enemy [Muslims, non-Christians, etc.]” Also, how about some commentary on what she said? Isn’t that kinda the whole point of a blog?

With regard to the “against the enemy” quote, I didn’t write the whole statement down and just couldn’t be sure if that’s what she had said. I couldn’t quote what I couldn’t recall. Plus, I think the “the womb is a powerful weapon” portion of the quote implies the existence of an enemy. We don’t use weapons against friends, right?

I appreciate the note about the lack of commentary. As you’ll see if you take a look around the blog, I’m just getting started and there are some posts that contain more personal commentary than others. But I’ll generally be making an effort to comment as much as the stories and time allow.
